NAU Police Department

At NAU, safety is a top priority. The NAU Police Department is responsible for law enforcement on campus and university-owned properties in Flagstaff. Our officers are certified by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) and have the same authority as Arizona police officers.

At NAUPD, we’re not just law enforcement—we’re part of the Lumberjack community. We’re here 24/7, 365 days a year, with patrol officers, an Investigations Division, a Community Relations Division, and an Emergency Communications Center. We also have student workers who help as University Safety Aides and Student Traffic Controllers.

Transparency is important to us. In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act, we maintain a Daily Crime and Fire Log, which lists reported incidents from the past 60 days.

Community policing at NAU

We believe in working together to keep our campus safe and community policing is how we do that. It’s about problem solving and building partnerships.

We don’t just respond to issues; we collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to identify concerns and find lasting solutions. Every member of our department follows this approach, and it guides everything we do.

Safety is a team effort. We can’t do it alone, which is why we focus on partnerships and shared responsibility. Together, we create a secure and supportive environment for everyone at NAU.

Interagency law enforcement

We work closely with the Flagstaff Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Department, and Arizona Department of Public Safety to keep our community safe.

NAU’s policy on weapons

Weapons are not allowed on NAU property, in university buildings, or at campus events. If you see or suspect a weapon on campus, report it.

If you need to use or store a weapon for a specific university-related reason, you must get approval from the NAU Chief of Police ahead of time. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
