Frequently asked admission questions

I’ve been accepted into NAU’s Universal Admissions program. What do I need to know?

Universal Admissions is a streamlined pathway where students begin their degree at a partner community college, then seamlessly transfer to NAU when they are ready. No additional application is needed to the partner community college now, and you won’t have to re-apply to NAU when you’re ready to transfer.

Can I study abroad?

Absolutely! NAU’s award-winning study abroad programs allow you the chance at experiential learning in more than 70 countries, generally at the standard NAU tuition rate. You can also study at more than 200 partner institutions across the US through the National Student Exchange.

Do I need a car?

No. First-year students, especially those living on Flagstaff campus, are strongly encouraged not to bring a car to campus. Students rarely use their cars—everyone on campus walks, bikes, or takes the shuttle to get around. In fact, more than 65% of NAU students never bring a car to campus and travel easily without a car.

Are first-year students required to live on campus?

Although NAU does not require freshmen to live on campus, the vast majority choose to do so, placing them at the heart of classes, dining options, resources, events, and more.

I’ve already got some college credits. Should I apply as a first-year or transfer student?

You’ll apply to NAU as a transfer student if:

  • you’ve graduated from high school, AND
  • you’ve earned 12 or more transferable credits from another college or university

You’ll apply to NAU as a freshman if:

  • you’ll graduate high school within one year, or
  • you’ve earned fewer than 12 college credits since graduating from high school, or
  • you’re dual-enrolled but have not yet graduated from high school
What is Flagstaff like?

Flagstaff is consistently ranked among the nation’s best college towns, and for good reason. We’ve got four beautiful seasons (including plenty of snow in winter), a thriving arts and culture scene, and more outdoor and recreational opportunities than you can imagine.
