Our application process is simple, clear, and built to get you moving toward your goals.

The big picture: From application to enrollment

Applying to graduate school is a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s what the journey looks like for graduate students applying to NAU.

1. Choose your program and apply online

Explore our graduate programs and find the one that fits your career goals. Each has its own requirements, and all applications typically take less than an hour to complete.

2. Upload required documents

Your program will likely require a statement of purpose, transcripts, letters of recommendation, a résumé or CV, and sometimes test scores like the GRE. Check the Academic Catalog or reach out directly to be sure you have everything covered.

3. Track your application status

Once you apply, you’ll receive a user ID to access the NAU LOUIE portal. Use it to stay updated on required documents and your admission decision.

4. Accept your offer and lock in your spot

After you’ve been admitted, confirm your enrollment and pay the fee to secure your place in the program.

5. Apply for financial aid, assistantships, or fellowships

Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using NAU code 001082 and look into assistantships, fellowships, and departmental awards to help fund your degree.

6. Prepare for your first semester

Meet with your advisor, register for classes, and complete onboarding steps. Your future starts now, and we’re here to support you at every turn!

Application timeline at a glance

Deadlines vary by program. Check out important dates and deadlines by graduate program for details and apply early for the best chances at admission and funding. Most programs admit for fall, but some also admit for spring and summer sessions. Check individual program pages for specifics.

Apply for financial aid as early as October 1. The FAFSA opens October 1 every year and is required for many forms of aid. You can complete your FAFSA before you are admitted to NAU.

Your success is our mission

At NAU, graduate students are part of a thriving research and professional community. Whether you’re returning to school or leveling up your career, our faculty, advisors, and peers are here to help you succeed.
