What to expect: international student application

Ready to study in the US? At NAU, you’ll join a welcoming international community and earn a degree that takes you places. From choosing a degree program to visa support, we’ll guide you through every step.

Your path to NAU starts here

Here’s what you can expect during the application process.

1. Choose your program and apply online

Whether you're going for an undergraduate or graduate degree, start by choosing your program. Applications typically take 30-45 minutes and are submitted through NAU’s international portal.

2. Upload required documents

To review your application, we’ll need:

  • official transcripts
  • proof of English proficiency
  • a copy of your passport
  • proof of financial support
  • additional items like a personal statement or letters of recommendation (varies by program)

3. Accept your offer and pay enrollment fee

Once you're admitted, confirm your spot at NAU by accepting your offer and submitting the enrollment fee (amount varies by program for graduate students and is $325 for first-year undergraduate students). This unlocks your access to housing, onboarding, and visa documents.

4. Get your I-20 and apply for your visa

After confirming enrollment and submitting your documents, we’ll issue your I-20. Use this to schedule your F-1 student visa interview at a US embassy or consulate.

5. Get ready to join us in Arizona!

Once your visa is approved, it’s time to plan your travel. Our International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team will support you with housing, health insurance, cultural transition, and more.

Application timeline at a glance

Make sure to leave enough time for admissions, visa paperwork, and travel planning. Here’s what to know:

Undergraduate students

Apply early! We recommend applying at least 4–6 months before your intended start date.

Visa processing begins after you've been admitted and submit proof of financial support. This process can take several weeks to months depending on your location.

Plan for required NAU onboarding that will occur 1–2 weeks before classes begin.

Graduate students

Start early! Gathering materials like transcripts and recommendations can take time.

Many important deadlines fall between January and March but will vary by program. Be sure to ask your program about important dates and deadlines to note.

We're here to support you!
