NAU Police Department

The NAU Police Department (NAUPD) provides 24/7 law enforcement and emergency services on campus and university properties. Our AZPOST-certified officers are dedicated to safety, transparency, and community partnerships.

The NAU Police Department (NAUPD) is more than just a law enforcement agency, we’re part of the NAU community. Our department operates 24/7, year-round, with dedicated patrol officers, an Investigations Division, a Community Relations Division, and an Emergency Communications Center. Student workers also contribute as University Safety Aides and Student Traffic Controllers.

In keeping with our commitment to transparency, we maintain a Daily Crime and Fire Log listing reported incidents from the past 60 days, in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Act.

Community policing approach

NAUPD practices community policing, an approach built on problem-solving and partnerships. Rather than only reacting to incidents, we work side-by-side with students, faculty, and staff to identify safety concerns and find long-term solutions.

Creating a safe campus is a shared responsibility. That’s why we prioritize collaboration to foster trust and ensure everyone in the Lumberjack community feels secure and supported.

Local law enforcement partnership

NAUPD partners with local agencies including the Flagstaff Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety to coordinate efforts and maintain public safety.

Services

Anonymous reporting

The tips report can be used to alert police for ongoing criminal activity (e.g., someone selling drugs). Reports are routed to an email box that is only periodically checked. Please do not submit a report for any crimes in progress (i.e., subjects threatening self-harm, active arguments, screams or cries, or other situations requiring immediate police response). Call 911 for an immediate police response.

NAU’s policy on weapons

Weapons are prohibited on NAU property, including in all campus buildings and at university-sponsored events. If you observe or suspect a weapon on campus, report it immediately.

Additional information on the university policy and temporary exception requests can be found at the University Policy Library.

Clery Act

Northern Arizona University complies with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act, a federal statute requiring all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to compile crime statistics from their campuses and provide safety information. Disclosures about crime statistics and policy statements are made by October 1 each year in an Annual Security Report and ongoing disclosures about specific crimes and emergencies are made available throughout the year.

The Clery Act requires institutions to disclose four general categories of crime statistics:

  • Criminal offenses
  • Hate crimes
  • VAWA offenses
  • Arrest and referrals
