Impact on sustainability
We’re making an impact on sustainability through innovative and eco-friendly solutions.
Located in Arizona, we face increased environmental vulnerabilities such as water scarcity, extreme heat waves, wildfires, and public health issues. As an institutional leader, NAU is responding to these global issues with a focus on adaptability, innovation, and stewardship. Recognizing the urgent need to rapidly adopt renewable energy solutions and sustainable operations, NAU is committed to carbon neutrality by 2030.

Our 2030 Sustainability Goal
To attain carbon neutrality by 2030, we’re working on transitioning to renewable energy sources, electrifying campus infrastructure, and promoting sustainable behaviors among the university community. Key initiatives include converting the district heating system to low-temperature hot water, electrifying campus vehicles, and reducing reliance on natural gas-powered appliances.
Key sustainability initiatives
- Green Fund: A student-led initiative funded by a $15 per semester fee, the Green Fund has invested over $3 million in more than 110 sustainability projects, such as installing solar panels, supporting the Yellow Bike Program, and enhancing recycling efforts.
- Reusable dining programs: We’ve partnered with USEFULL to introduce stainless steel, tech-enabled reusable containers at select dining locations, significantly reducing single-use plastic waste.
- Energy and water conservation: We’ve achieved notable reductions in resource consumption, including a 13% decrease in natural gas usage, a 14% reduction in water use, and a 4.6% drop in electricity consumption compared to the previous year.
- Sustainable transportation: We promote eco-friendly commuting through programs like the Yellow Bike Program, which provides free bike rentals to students, faculty, and staff, and by initiating the electrification of our shuttle bus fleet.
- LEED-Certified buildings: The campus boasts 14 LEED-certified buildings, reflecting NAU’s commitment to green construction and environmentally conscious design.
Community engagement and education
We integrate sustainability into our educational mission at NAU, offering programs and research opportunities focused on environmental issues. One example is our Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) which collaborates with tribal communities to address climate change impacts.
Join us in making a difference
NAU invites students, faculty, staff, and the Flagstaff community to participate in our sustainability efforts. Whether through proposing projects to the Green Fund, adopting sustainable daily practices, or engaging in educational programs, every action contributes to a greener future.
