Commencement: What to know as a guest

Welcome to NAU Commencement! Find everything you need to plan your visit, from ceremony times and parking to travel tips and celebration ideas.

Planning your visit

Ceremony schedule and tickets

Most commencement ceremonies take place in the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome on campus. Confirm your student’s college and degree level to ensure you're attending the correct ceremony. Guest tickets must be requested by the graduate in advance (tickets will not be available on the day of the event!). Only the spring ceremonies require guest tickets for guests ages 4 years old or older. Seating is general admission, so arrive early for the best view.

Getting here

  • Driving: Flagstaff is easily accessed via I-17 and I-40, about a two-hour drive from Phoenix.
  • Flying: Fly into Flagstaff Pullman Airport (FLG) or Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), then drive or shuttle to campus.

Parking info

Guest parking is free in designated lots during commencement. Signs will guide you, and free shuttles typically run between the San Francisco Parking Garage (P96B), lot P62, and the Skydome.

Skydome tips

The Skydome fills quickly, especially for spring ceremonies. Plan to arrive at least one hour early. Bring only what you need (a clear bag policy will be in place) and wear comfortable shoes. Amenities such as restrooms, food vendors, and ADA accommodations will be available.

Photography

You’re welcome to take your own photos. Professional images of each graduate will also be available to purchase after the ceremony.

Accessibility accommodations

ADA-accessible and companion seating is available in the Skydome. Students must reserve these tickets in pairs—one for the guest using a mobility device and one for a companion. For both fall and spring ceremonies, only one companion may sit in the accessible seating area; the rest of the party will be directed to general admission seating nearby.
