Jazz Madrigal Festival
Join vocal ensembles from across the region at NAU’s Jazz Madrigal Festival, a weekend of performance, learning, and connection in Flagstaff, Arizona. Receive expert feedback, collaborate with peers, and celebrate choral artistry in a non-competitive setting.

NAU’s Jazz Madrigal Festival is a welcoming, non-competitive event for vocal jazz and madrigal ensembles at all levels. Hosted by NAU Choral Studies and the NAU Student Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, the festival offers a space for singers to perform, connect, and receive expert guidance from respected clinicians.

What to expect
The Jazz Madrigal Festival takes place over three days each February on the NAU campus and surrounding Flagstaff venues.
Vocal jazz and madrigal ensembles of all experience levels are invited to participate. Groups may choose whether or not to receive a performance rating.
- Ratings include: I (superior), II (excellent), III (good), IV (needs attention)
- All groups will receive a commemorative plaque.
Performance details
- Ensembles are scheduled for a 25-minute slot, which includes performance time, clinician feedback, and transitions.
- Up to 3 selections (~12 minutes total)
- Madrigal groups may perform any chamber-style repertoire, with or without accompaniment.
- Provided equipment varies by venue and includes pianos, microphones, risers, and standard jazz gear
- Pre-recorded tracks are not permitted
- NAU accompanists or rhythm section support may be available upon request
Registration and fees
- Registration typically opens in the fall.
- Fee: $300 per ensemble
- Two ensembles per director during initial registration
- Additional groups may be considered later if space allows.
Locations and clinicians
Multiple performance sites are available across campus for jazz and madrigal ensembles. Each group receives feedback from nationally recognized clinicians who rotate throughout the event.
Past clinicians have included:
- Dr. Derrick Fox – Michigan State University
- Dr. Cari Earnhart – California State University, Fresno
- Dr. Kate Skinner – University of Idaho
- Members of The Real Group - Swedish world renowned a cappella group
- Bruce Rogers – Professor Emeritus, Mt. San Antonio College
Evening concerts and guest performances
Evening concerts feature guest artists and NAU ensembles. Past performances have included The Real Group and the Shrine of the Ages Choir, as well as midday showcases from NAU’s vocal jazz group, High Altitude. Concerts range from ticketed evening events to free daytime performances.
Auditions for prospective NAU music majors
High school seniors who are interested in pursuing a music degree at NAU may audition during the festival weekend. To schedule an audition, students must first apply to be admitted to NAU.
