Federal Pell Grants
Pell Grants are need-based financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid. If you’re an undergrad working on your first degree and qualify through the FAFSA, a Pell grant could go a long way in covering your college costs.
Who is eligible?
Pell Grants are awarded to undergraduates working toward their first bachelor’s degree who demonstrate financial need. You’ll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find out if you qualify. If you’re eligible, your award amount will show up in your NAU financial aid offer and in your LOUIE account.
How is eligibility determined?
Your Pell Grant amount depends on a few key things:
- financial need (based on your FAFSA)
- cost to attend NAU
- Student Aid Index (SAI)
- enrollment status (full-time, part-time, or less than half-time)
- number of semesters you plan to attend
- your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) status
How much money can I receive?
For 2024–25, the maximum Pell Grant is $7,395. You might get the full amount, or a portion of it, depending on your eligibility. Want to get an estimate? Try our Net Price Calculator to see how much Pell Grant (and other aid) you may qualify for.
Year-round Pell
You may be able to receive up to 150% of your annual Pell Grant, meaning extra funds if you take classes in summer. For example, if you’re awarded $2,000 for the year, you might receive $1,000 in fall, $1,000 in spring, and, if eligible, up to $1,000 more in summer. Need help figuring it out?
