Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between internal and external scholarships?

Internal scholarships refer to scholarships directly awarded by NAU, and external scholarships refer to any scholarships awarded by an outside source. Every external scholarship posted in ScholarshipUniverse has been vetted to ensure it came from a reliable source.

What is ScholarshipUniverse

ScholarshipUniverse is a matching system that maximizes scholarship opportunities for students. ScholarshipUniverse allows students to create an academic profile that connects them with various internal and external scholarship opportunities that match their criteria.

What makes ScholarshipUniverse so convenient for users?

ScholarshipUniverse saves students the time and energy of sifting through hundreds of fraudulent or irrelevant scholarship opportunities and allows them to focus on submitting strong applications for scholarships that they are uniquely qualified for.

How are scholarships listed on ScholarshipUniverse vetted?

Each scholarship opportunity that a student sees on ScholarshipUniverse has gone through an extensive vetting process in order to protect students from scholarship scams. When students search for good matches in ScholarshipUniverse, they can rest assured that the opportunities are legitimate and worth the time and effort it takes to apply.

Why should I complete “My Profile” in ScholarshipUniverse?

ScholarshipUniverse is a one-stop shop for all your scholarship needs. You can apply, review, research, and accept scholarship aid worry-free. All departments on campus will use this platform in future academic years to post their scholarship opportunities. The questions you complete in your profile will carry over throughout your academic career at NAU.

Do I have to be a student at NAU to access the portal?

Private donor scholarships

Private scholarships come from outside companies, organizations or individuals and are not offered or administered by NAU.

By far the best way to search for and apply for private scholarships is by using our ScholarshipUniverse tool. Like with other scholarships mentioned above, simply enter your information and ScholarshipUniverse will match you with scholarships you're eligible for.

Other ways to find private scholarships

  • Research: Search for scholarships awarded to students based on college majors, hobbies, achievements, grades, or other criteria that might apply to you. Organizations such as CollegeBoard and FastWeb can help you find scholarships.
  • Plan ahead: Donors might ask for essays, résumés, or letters of recommendation. Consider creating a general essay template that you can modify for different donors, and begin gathering letters of recommendation as soon as possible.
  • Submit complete applications. Always check you have completed the entire application and answered all of the questions before submitting your application.
  • Be cautious of scams. No legitimate scholarship donor will ask you for money to apply for an award.

For scholarship donors

Thank you for your generosity in partnering with us to help make higher education accessible to all!

To add your scholarship information to our website, submit a request to scholarships@nau.edu with the name of your award opportunity and application due date in the subject line. We’ll review the scholarship website and/or application you provide. If approved for posting, we’ll notify you via email. We appreciate your patience during the review process.

Please note that links that do not go directly to a scholarship application are not accepted.

Sending a scholarship check

Once we receive a scholarship check and any corresponding documentation, we work to post the award on the student’s account in a timely manner. Donors sending a scholarship check for a specific student (or several students) must send the check, made out to:

Northern Arizona University
Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid
PO Box 4108
Flagstaff, AZ 86011

Include the student’s NAU ID number and full name on the check, and an award letter that specifies any of the scholarship requirements or restrictions, including which term the scholarship should be applied to. If you have any questions, please contact us at scholarships@nau.edu.

Priority dates for scholarship checks

All third-party, private donor scholarship checks should be received in our office no later than July 1 for the fall term and Dec. 1 for the spring term to ensure they are posted to the student’s account prior to fall disbursement.
