A lifetime of learning starts at NAU

Evolution into more than teaching education

The College of Education (COE) has been part of NAU since the very beginning. Founded in 1899 as Northern Arizona Normal School, NAU started with just 23 students and two faculty members. NAU’s mission continues to guide the COE today.

Today, we offer more than just teacher education programs. We also offer programs in principalship, community college leadership, superintendentship, clinical psychology, applied human behavior, and mental health-related professions.

Where you go after attending COE depends on where you want to lead. Whether that’s in the classroom, in educational leadership, or in the broader community, we’ll prepare you to make an impact.

Experience more with COE

At the College of Education, learning goes far beyond the classroom. In addition to academic programs, students connect with top educators and gain real-world experience through a variety of events and opportunities.

  • Strong involvement in community events – There’s a Reason I’m a Teacher (TARIAT) conference provides professional development opportunities for our teacher candidates as they interact with recognized and outstanding teachers through keynote addresses and breakout sessions. NAU’s College of Education teacher candidates come away from this conference with information on best practices that they will soon use daily in their classrooms as they enter the teaching profession.
  • Arizona and beyond – Graduates can teach out of state or internationally! The Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program offers opportunities to student teach overseas.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness – At COE, we adapt quickly to meet the evolving needs of our students, continually updating programs to stay relevant and supportive in a changing world.
  • Federal TEACH Grant – The federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant offers financial support for students pursuing a teaching career.
  • Arizona Teachers Academy (ATA) – A state-funded scholarship program that covers tuition and mandatory fees for students in all teacher certification programs. Only NAU offers the scholarship to first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior, and graduate levels. NAU awarded $7.3 million in ATA scholarships in 2023–2024.

I highly recommend NAU because they really want you to succeed. They make sure you can go to school, and you can get transportation, get grants, get scholarships. They are really helpful. They give you all of these resources. And it’s a place that feels like home.
